I first learned about the McCollough effect from an Amateur Scientist article in the March 1986 Scientific American. Alas, that article, and most of those below, are available only on microfiche, which has inferior color reproduction.

• Color adaptation of edge-detectors in the human visual system, by C. McCollough, appeared in Science, 149, 1115-1116.
• Extraversion and the McCollough Effect, Nicola A. Logue and William Byth, British Journal of Psychology (1993), 84, 67-84. Examines a prediction by Shute (1979) and Skowbo & Michaud (1985) that the M.E. might be enhanced in extraverts.
• Normal McCollough effect in Alzeimer's disease and global amnesia, Robert L. Savoy and John D.E. Gabrieli, Perception & Psychophysics (1991), 49 (5), 448-455. Though the effect's long-lasting nature may suggest the involvement of memory, the strength and duration is comparable to control subjects.
